Hope you‘ve ALL been having a WONDERFUL start to the NEW year. What a BLESSING it is to be ALIVE another year--to HONOR the year passed & CELEBRATE ALL of our POSSIBILITIES in the new year ahead! It is important to realize the POWER WE HAVE TO DECIDE HOW OUR LIVES WILL EVOLVE THIS YEAR, & to take full ownership over the things we CAN control--like attitude, mindset, goals, & mission(s)...like the ways we treat others, the LIGHT of ours that we allow to SHINE, & the ways we STRIVE to make a POSITIVE difference in this world.

And if you haven’t set 2025 GOALS for yourself, NOW is a perfect time to go ahead and WRITE THEM DOWN. Make a point to CHECK IN with your goals once a week at a SPECIFIED TIME…and also remember that goals CAN be met, modified, and re-created as YOU keep evolving. Just KEEP on keepin on and making the MOST of the time you’re given. Onward, upward, forward.. but take time to smell the roses along the way. Commit to the DIRECTION you want to move towards, and find those steps that get you there (however small they may seem—they are NEVER insignificant). Progress is not perfection, progress is PROGRESS towards becoming YOUR best self. But YOU can become SO MUCH BETTER by not “drifting” and letting life happen TO you, and instead deciding to recognize that the life YOU create can happen FOR you.

Also, recognize the POWER in the prefix “re”… REset. REdirect. REfocus. REpeat. REaddress. REtry. REstart. The only thing stopping you from the verb on the other side of “re” is YOU. Don’t be the only one standing in your way. It’s never too early. It’s never too late. YOU are capable of anything.

Extensive past research demonstrates that increased surface laryngeal hydration prevents & manages voice problems in professional & occupational voice users. A recent study (Supreetha & Jayakumar, 2024) looked into the effects of surface hydration on the voice quality of speech pathologists (via the use of nebulized saline solution) using thermal, acoustic, & self-perceptual measures.
30 SLPs were divided into 3 groups… group 1 had no voice usage at all, group 2 read aloud for one hour WITHOUT any surface hydration, & group 3 read aloud for one hour WITH surface hydration for 10 minutes. The measures (thermal, acoustic, & self-perceptual looking into perceived phonatory effort & perceived vocal tiredness) were taken for all groups pre & post vocal loading tasks.
The comparisons revealed that thermal measures showed significant increases in group 2 & a significant decrease in group 3. Acoustic measurements & self-perceptual measurements showed a significant increase in group 2 compared to group 3 & the between-group comparisons in the post-test setting showed a significant decrease in many outcome measures in group 3 compared to group 2.
All of these results support that SURFACE HYDRATION SIGNIFICANTLY INFLUENCES THE VOICE QUALITY of occupational & professional voice users as related to a vocal loading task (& it is widely known that vocal loading is very common in these populations). It was also quite interesting that this study confirms the benefits of this surface hydration (using nebulized saline) in speech pathologists!…
Hopefully this encourages ALL SLPs & ALL occupational & professional voice users to MONITOR vocal loading tasks & CONSIDER 10 minutes of nebulized saline intermittently between them. LOVE when research proves that “surface hydration preserves vocal quality compared to those not hydrated during vocal loading” AND encourages SLPs to PRIORITIZE THEIR VOICES!! Andddd love when we KNOW this applies to ALL occupational & professional voice users!
