...Well, isn’t this a GREAT example of the importance of looking inside?
.
This has GOT to be a FAVORITE of mine!!!!
.
The patient had complaints related to vocal effort, strain, reduced vocal, endurance, a breathiness to the voice, some challenges with breathing, and of course, globus sensation. Can you imagine why in the world they would have the sensation of “something stuck in the throat”? I saw this one in the company of the amazing laryngologist I work with, buuuuut had to share.
.
.
This patient felt much better after surgery. .. but what an incredible example of the monumental IMPORTANCE of PRIORITIZING videostroboscopy!!!!! We don’t know if we don’t look!!! And even then, we want the details that a stroboscopy provides (quality, magnification, the ability to see vibratory parameters, the ability to review the exam with the patient, and the list goes on and on and on…). What if this patient was just continuing with their day-to-day life thinking they had trouble breathing because they stopped working out a few months back? What if they were attending voice therapy sessions (with little to likely no improvement)? What if they were told their globus sensation was related to reflux? PRIORITIZE YOUR VOICE by PRIORITIZING VIDEOSTROBOSCOPY. Prioritize your voice by listening to your body and your intuition.
.
.

This study is actually from a survey of 237 primary school teachers where it was found that 1/3 of the teachers sought professional help for voice problems, less than half of the teachers were aware of voice therapy or that a doctor could even help, and yes, 30% believed that hoarseness from teaching was normal!!
.
.
Those of us in the “voice world” understand that hoarseness is never normal, but it is likely extremely common that people who are occupational voice users may assume differently…
.
.
This may be ESPECIALLY relevant in the cases of those OCCUPATIONAL VOICE USERS who are TEACHERS, INSTRUCTORS, COACHES, and/or those who use their voices in ways that naturally place them at higher and more consistent risk of dysphonia/vocal injury.
.
.
These “ways” may include constant high VOCAL DEMANDS, a consistent need to project and maintain a high VOCAL LOAD, a need to be heard over noise (music, background noise, the voices of others, etc.), and a lack of TRAINING and AWARENESS about the importance of VOCAL HEALTH/WELLNESS, VOCAL EFFICIENCY, and DYNAMIC VOICE USE for HEALTHY teaching/coaching/instructing/
.
.
You KNOW this is my PASSION. There is so much POWER in EDUCATION and TRAINING related to these concepts for ALL voice users, especially those who are heavy occupational and/or professional voice users. And especially those who use their voices to LEAD, GUIDE, TEACH, COACH, INSPIRE, MOTIVATE, and POSITIVELY IMPACT others. It is so important that these and ALL occupational voice users HONOR their voices for the beautiful INSTRUMENTS that they are by PROTECTING them and playing/using them in the most EFFICIENT ways possible to promote VOCAL SUCCESS and CAREER LONGEVITY.

This past weekend (Saturday October 19th), we had SO much fun at our local Walk for Talk here in Scottsdale! Such a GREAT group of support group members, medical professionals, ASU students, family, friends, and PETS!…. Esther (our leader) and Ed (her friend and longtime group supporter) started us off with an inspiring speech and then Roxanne (a TaiChi master and support group meeting speaker for us) led us through a breathing-related warmup. Check out some pictures from our walk!!! We had such a wonderful morning and event and probably our best turnout yet!!
.
I’m so GRATEFUL to be a part of our Valley of the Sun group and Dysphonia International!! Final totals are not yet in from the (WORLDWIDE) walk, but we (Dysphonia International) have surpassed our $100,000 goal and are already well past it (!!!)…you can still donate too. All donations are matched as well..and ALL go to fund research for a CURE for laryngeal dystonia/spasmodic dysphonia (and related voice conditions).
.
BECAUSE OF THE FUNDS RAISED SINCE WALK FOR TALK STARTED IN 2020, OVER HALF A MILLION DOLLARS HAVE BEEN DISTRIBURED TO SUPPORT RESEARCH IN THE PAST FOUR YEARS!
.
"Walk for Talk is not only about unifying people living with spasmodic dysphonia and related voice conditions but also the larger community that supports them, including family, friends, healthcare professionals, researchers, students, neighbors, co-workers, and pets, in a fun and creative way. This event is about empowering people to share the challenges of living with a voice disorder to educate and raise awareness. This event is about funding research to find answers for better treatments and a greater understanding of these complex voice disorders. This event is about hope for the future because every step gets us closer to a cure. And this event couldn't be a success without you! We thank YOU for your participation and support!" Such a great conference as always(!!!)… and so wonderful to see so many colleagues and friends!…& this year it was in my own backyard here in AZ. Made it easy to still teach at night and go to classes before or after the conference… #movementismedicine
.
I absolutely love continuing education & strive to get myself to as many conferences &/or courses as possible throughout the year.. because there is soooo much TRUTH to the saying IF YOU’RE NOT LEARNING YOU’RE NOT GROWING. And it’s VERY important to me to never be stagnant, & to always be growing. For my own sanity, but also to be the best professional & person that I can be (for patients and clients, & in general).
.
SUPER EXCITED that @scharns & I had TWO posters this year— stay tuned for articles SOON!
1) Understanding Teachers’ Perspectives on Voice Relative to their Occupation
2) Speech Pathologist and Dental Provider Collaboration: Impact of an education based training on dental provider perspectives regarding the value of multidisciplinary care of patients with otolaryngology-related complaints
.
I hope and pray that I will ALWAYS be powered by PASSION & PURPOSE & have a growth mindset & motivation for learning & participating in RESEARCH. But I know myself pretty well, & I’m pretty sure I will! CHEERS to next year!!

How are YOU prioritizing your voice today? And everyday? As an OCCUPATIONAL VOICE USER, it SHOULD be one of your top priorities!
.
What do you need to know to keep your voice healthy? You should understand how the voice works, how to protect and care for your voice, and how to use your voice and entire vocal mechanism in the most efficient, effective, and dynamic ways possible.
.
.
I’m super PASSIONATE about this population of voice users (I’m one and most of you are too!), and am HERE TO HELP! Reach out with any questions, concerns, or if you’d like to work together. Email me at [email protected] or DM me on @voxfit_ ...
